The southern Thai city of Songkhla will officially unveil its new THB240 million (US$7.1 million) aquarium on 26 September, The Nation has reported. The new attraction is hoped to boost tourism in the city, which has suffered by reputation (though rarely involvement) from the unrest in Thailand’s south.
Songkhla’s Mayor, Uthit Chuchuay, said he hoped the aquarium would generate at least THB50 million in revenue in its first year, mainly through Singaporean and Malaysian visitors.
