The five days where this levy applies are the daysleading up to and including the race on 28 September next year.
The room taxes would add to the government cofferswhich are helping financially to stage the event. The race is expected to boost Governmentcoffers by an average of between S$15 million and S$20 million a year, helpingto defray the cost of staging the event, which could be as much as S$150million.
Hotels are still working out the rates during the racedays. Many have planned to set a five-day minimum stay during the race period, similar to other F1 race cities.
Commenting on the different levy rates for hotels, theMinistry of Trade and Industry was quoted saying in local papers that :”Some hotels are likely to benefit more from the event than others due totheir proximity to the circuit or because their rooms have a good view of thetrack.”
It said F1 cities normally experience almost full occupancy during F1 racedays, hence the levies.
