Bangkok is at the centre of SriLanka Airlines’ five-year development plan that focuses on the Asian market.
The national carrier plans to use Suvarnabhumi Airport as satellite hub for flights from its base in Colombo to Southeast Asia and Northeast Asia. It will be used as a connecting point for current services to Hong Kong, Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Tokyo, as well as potential routes to South Korea and the Philippines.
CEO Kapila Chandrasena said; “Thailand is an important market for Sri Lanka in terms of an airline hub and tourism.” According to the Bangkok Post, SriLankan Airlines operates 26 flights per week to Thailand, up from just 12 flights last year, bringing in monthly revenue of 35 million baht, up 80%.
The airline is also looking to promote tourist traffic between the two tourist destinations. The scheme compliments the Government’s policy that identifies tourism as a key industry that will drive the country’s economic growth. Sri Lankan authorities are already investing in a new airport, upgrading the existing international airport, and developing its road network.
