easyJet founder Stelios Haji-Ioannou has criticised the airline’s board for not consulting with shareholders before David Michels’ departure. Michels gave notice in May that he would leave the board at the end of the year but stepped down with immediate effect last week. The Compass Group’s Andy Martin and Adle Anderson from KPMG have now joined the board, with recently appointed Charles Gurassa as deputy chairman and senior independent director. It is this decision that has caused Haji-Ioannout to launch his latest attack on the easyJet board. “The unwillingness of Michels and the rest of this board to put this matter to a shareholder vote proves that they have lost all legitimacy to run this company as they no longer enjoy the trust of the majority of the shareholders. We will announce further steps to protect shareholder value next week,” he said in a statement.
