Thai AirAsia drives group’s growth in Q1

AirAsia achieved a rise in passenger traffic in the first quarter of 2015, driven by a strong increase in demand for its Thai flights.
In total, AirAsia’s short-haul airlines carried 11.88 million passengers in Q1, 3% more than the same period last year, with an average aircraft load factor of 77%. But Thai AirAsia‘s traffic surged 19% to 3.70m passengers in the three-month period, with load factors rising three points to 83%.
The group’s main Malaysian unit saw a steady 3% increase in traffic to 5.54m passengers, although load factors dropped six points to 75%, and Indonesian AirAsia saw a slump in traffic (-26% to 1.56m) and load factors (-6 points to 70%). In the Philippines, AirAsia Zest’s traffic fell 6% to 843,250 but load factors jumped 11 points to 77%.
AirAsia India flew 240,000 passengers with load factors of 79%, although no year-on-year comparisons were available for the airline, which only launched last summer.
At the end of the first quarter, AirAsia operated a total fleet of 171 aircraft: 82 based in Malaysia, 42 in Thailand, 29 in Indonesia, 15 in the Philippines and three in India.
