Following the collapse of the UK’s third largest tour operator, XL, the top two - Thomas Cook and TUI have experienced a surge of bookings, according to the Financial Times. TUI has reported that 94% of their summer 2008 programmes were sold - up 3% year-on-year, despite the global economic slowdown. Likewise, Thomas Cook sold 94% of their summer programmes, and at rates 7% higher than in 2007. Additionally both operators have already sold about a third of their winter programmes and 12-15% for summer 2009.
“We have enjoyed a surge of bookings since the unfortunate collapse of XL and that will continue,” said TUI’s Chief Executive, Peter Long.
