More than 40 people have escaped after a tourist boat sank in Halong Bay on Sunday. According to local media reports, the boat collided with a supply boat when it was anchored off Titop Island. According to Thanh Nien News, all 28 tourists, 12 crew and a tour guide were rescued from the vessel, which was owned Hai Long Company.
The incident echoes the fatal sinking of a tourist boat in the area earlier this year. In February 2011, 12 people died when a tourist boat sank near Titop Island, in the UNESCO World Heritage-listed bay. That tragedy led to a clampdown on safety standards among boat operators in Halong Bay.
