TUI Travel has reduced its commission from 10% to 0.1% following its removal of ATOL protection on seat-only bookings. The group has decided to cease its ATOL bonding for flight-only sales to realign Thomson Airways with other airlines, some of which do not pay the levy. “We want to ensure the creation of a level playing field and one where the subject of ATOL protection does not leave customers with any doubt as to whether their holidays are financially protected or not,” said a spokesperson. “It has become necessary for the business to ensure we protect our position in an ever changing and aggressive marketplace.” The change will be effective from 1 November and TUI said it was working with partners to alter procedures. The company and other travel businesses continue to lobby the CAA and Government to change the ATOL scheme.
