A section of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Preah Vihear temple is reported to have been damaged following the border clashes between Cambodia and Thailand over the weekend. Channel NewsAsia reported Cambodian officials as saying that one wing of the 11th Century Hindu temple had “collapsed”, while the country’s Prime Minister, Hun Sen, said that “many” artillery shells had been fired into Preah Vihear on Sunday. A Thai village was also hit by mortar fire on Friday, killing one civilian. As many as 94 Thai and Cambodian may have been killed in the weekend’s clashes.
The temple’s UNESCO listing in 2008 was a catalyst for the resumption hostilities in the border dispute between Thailand and Cambodia, which has erupted so violently over the past few days. Thailand claims that the hilltop temple lies on its territory, despite a 49 year-old World Court ruling that stated it belongs to Cambodia.
