Authorities at Urumqi’s Diwopu International Airport, in northwest China’s Xinjiang region, have decided to reopen the old Terminal 1 in an effort to ease congestion.
T1 was first built in 1931, but was closed almost three years ago when the new domestic T2 was launched. But the new terminal is already running at full capacity, forcing airport operators to reopen T1.
Seven airlines will now operate from the old terminal: Tianjin Airlines, Spring Airlines, Okay Airways, China West Air, Capital Airlines, China United Airlines and Lucky Air. China’s main domestic airlines, including Air China, China Southern Airlines and China Eastern Airlines, will continue to operate from T2 while international airlines, such as Korean Air, Air Astana and S7, will to be based at T3.
Passenger traffic at the Urumqi Airport is experiencing strong double-digit growth, rising 21% to 13.5 million passengers in 2012, and increasing a further 19% in the first six months of 2013. This makes it China’s 15th busiest airport in terms of passenger traffic.
