In a bid to woo cash-strapped travellers, touristdestinations in the US are offering tourists deep discounts and freezing gateprices, Associated Press reported.
Some of the offerings include free night stays at WaltDisney World in Florida, coupons worth US$15 off at Pennsylvania’s Hersheypark, and admission to the Georgia Aquarium – the world’s largest fish tank – at lastyear’s prices.
“Given so many people have lost their jobs and aren’tgetting raises and aren’t getting bonuses, it did not seem appropriate to do aprice increase this year,” Dave Santucci, spokesperson for the Atlanta-basedaquarium was quoted saying.
The report said the tourism industry hasn’t seen ayear this bad since just after the 11 September 2001 terrorist attacks, whenhotel occupancy dropped 16% over the prior year, Jan Freitag, Vice President ofhotel benchmarking firm, Smith Travel Research, was quoted saying.
“It’s not pretty right now, from the hotelperspective. Some analysts out there think it’s going to get much worse.”
At Walt Disney World near Orlando, visitors can saveUS$400 off the price of a seven-night stay between February and the end ofJune.
Hersheypark, which runs a zoo and amusement park nextto the headquarters for the iconic chocolate company, is offering US$15 off theUS$51.95 price of admission.
