International visitor arrivals to Vietnam declined for the third consecutive month in August.
According to the latest data from the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism (VNAT), the country achieved 618,588 overseas visitors last month, 8.6% fewer than in August 2013.
Once again, the decline was caused by a sharp drop in the number of Chinese visitors to Vietnam. Impacted by recent territorial disputes between the two countries, Chinese arrivals in Vietnam slumped 29.0% in August to 135,170.
Mainland China remains Vietnam’s largest visitor source market however, ahead of South Korea (+34.2% to 87,457), Japan (+16.3% to 62,822), the USA (+7.9% to 32,067) and Taiwan (-16.8% to 30,821). Russia (+28.0% to 24,024) remains the country’s biggest European source market.
For the first eight months of the year, Vietnam has now welcomed a total of 5.47 million international arrivals, up 12.2% year-on-year.
