Virgin Australia has expanded its international network through a series of new codeshare agreements.
The airline has now started placing its ‘VA’ code on Delta Air Lines’ flights from Los Angeles to Seattle and Boston, on Etihad Airways’ services from Abu Dhabi to Zurich, Minsk, Medina and Rome, and Singapore Airlines’ flights to Athens and Brunei.
The widespread expansion comes 10 years after Virgin Australia launched its first ever international flight, on the Brisbane-Christchurch route.
“Over the past 10 years, we have operated over 100,000 international flights, carrying around 15 million passengers,” said Virgin Australia’ chief commercial officer, Judith Crompton. “Our strategy of flying into key international hubs and creating a virtual global network with our alliance partners has brought significant benefits for consumers and for our business.
“From a business perspective, we have seen codeshare and interline revenue more than triple over the last three years. Today we are also pleased to announce new codeshare services to major business and tourist destinations in the United States, Europe and the Middle East, as part of our commitment to continuing to enhance our offering for travellers,” she added.
Virgin Australia now flies to 16 international destinations, but offers codeshare and interline flights to a further 386 destinations.
