WOW Air has been told it cannot launch flights to Boston after being denied the departure slots at Keflavik Airport.
The airline said an “indefinite waiting period” to secure key departure slots means it has been forced to cancel the Boston launch in spring 2014.
Last November the Icelandic Competition Authority concluded WOW’s rival Icelandair has a monopoly on slots between Iceland and North America and instructed the country’s airport service provider Isavia to allow WOW Air to have access to vital slot times.
However WOW has not been given slot times yet so cannot launch its Boston route in time for the spring.
“We’re in a position to offer these additional routes and are incredibly disappointed to be prevented from doing so due to an unresolved decision on departure allocations. This is not only having a detrimental effect on our plans to expand, but also on our passengers’ right to competitive rates and Icelandic tourism as a whole,” said Skúli Mogensen, CEO and founder of WOW Air.
The airline will continue to push for the departure allocations and still plans to expand in North America.
