World Travel Market (WTM) has announced it will hold a discussion about sports tourism as this year’s event. WTM Chairman Fiona Jeffery said that the debate would aim to dispel any myths surrounding the tourism impact of holding sports events. “Undoubtedly sports tourism is a tough legacy for everyone,” explained Jeffery. “But the myth is that those who successfully bid for a major sporting event automatically win the golden jackpot. It can be an absolute minefield. This has been clearly illustrated by the problems surrounding the Commonwealth Games in India.” Representatives from South Africa, UNWTO, TUI, VisitBritain, ETOA and Bournemouth University will participate in the session. Jeffery also outlined other issues including ticket pricing, corporate hospitality acquisition, merchandising and security.
