The Myanmar government is planning to expand Yangon International Airport (YIA) as traffic volume approaches capacity. Arrivals are up this year and plans are being developed to extend and upgrade the facility. The aim is to raise annual passenger capacity from 2.7 million to 3.8 million and upgrade it to an international airport. YIA recorded a 21.7% year-on-year increase in international arrivals in the last quarter. Foreign visitor arrivals hit 510,000, while travellers on domestic airlines numbered 360,000, up 23.5%. According to the New Light of Myanmar, total arrivals are expected to hit two million passengers this year and will soon surpass airport capacity of 2.7 million passengers a year.
