Yangtze River to supply water to Beijing by 2014
The Yangtze River is expected to provide 1 billion cubic metres of water every year to the Chinese capital. Beijing, from 2014, Xinhua has reported. The ‘South-to-North Water Diversion Project’ is designed to divert water from the water-rich south of the country, mainly from the Yangtze River, to the dry north. Experts hope it will solve Beijing’s increasing water-shortage.
The shortage in Beijing is set to reach a crisis point in 2010, when the city’s population is expected to top 17 million, or 3 million more than its resources can support, the report said.
