This year will mark a ‘breakout year’ for tourism in Greece as visitation picks up.

Private sector organisation Marketing Greece has released figures showing UK visitor numbers were up 32% between January and August 2014 compared to last year.

London arrivals were up 43% while numbers from Edinburgh soared 61%, both thanks to new flights.

Combined with more visitors from the US and France and tourism from around the world, combined travel receipts increased 14% to EUR6.68 billion.

Cruise passenger numbers are also seeing a boost and are expected to reach a record 21.5 million.

Marketing Greece managing director Iossif Parsalis, said: “The tourism industry in Greece has seen healthy growth in recent years. The Greek capital, in particular, has now made an impressive rebound and the latest figures for Greece overall are a cause for real optimism.

“These figures are reward for the investment that has been made across the country – by Greece’s carrier and international airlines, Athens International Airport, hotels and service providers.”
