Asian travel company Backyard Travel has unveiled a new sailing tour around the islands of Myanmar’s seldom-visited Mergui Archipelago.
The 10-day itinerary begins in Yangon, where travellers have two days to explore the city sights, before heading to the port city of Kawthaung on the Andaman coast.
From there, travellers join the captain and crew of their luxury boat and embark on a five-day/four-night voyage around the archipelago, which comprises approximately 800 islands.
“The Mergui Archipelago is one of the region’s last frontiers,” said Backyard Travel’s general manager, Maeve Nolan. “Parts of the archipelago still remain unmapped and it’s this relative isolation that has fostered some of the most bio-diverse island ecosystems in the world.
“A small, boutique sailing trip such as this allows travelers to visit the archipelago in a low-impact, culturally sensitive and enriching manner,” she added.
Among the many tour highlights is a trip to Lampi Island, a protected area that is home to a population of dugongs. Travellers can also snorkel and visit traditional villages of the Moken people – the local semi-nomadic seafaring communities.
Nights are spent on the cabin and meals are prepared with fresh seafood purchased from local villages.
