More than 3.6 billion trips are expected to be taken in China during the 40-day Spring Festival, authorities have revealed.
The annual event, which marks the world’s biggest human migration, got underway last week and is expected to see a total of 3.62m journeys made by road, rail, air and water. This equates to every Chinese man, woman and child making an average of 2.65 trips each.
China’s roads are expected to bear the brunt of the travel rush, accounting for approximately 3.3m trips. A further 258m people – approximately the equivalent of the entire population of Indonesia – are expected to travel by rail, while airlines will handle an estimated 42m passengers, or the population of Argentina.
To cater for this, transport companies are laying on thousands of extra services. According to China’s Ministry of Transport, a total of 860,000 coaches, 21,000 and 400,000 flights will be operated during the Spring Festival. But despite the extra capacity, severe congestion is still expected across China’s transport networks.
