More than seven million British people are expected to head on a holiday this Bank Holiday weekend.
VisitEngland has said 5.1 million Brits are set to take an overnight trip in the UK during the Bank Holiday, while 2m are due to fly out of airports for city and sun breaks.
In the UK the trips are likely to generate GBP1.2 billion in tourism spend, while an expected 6m that plan to take a day trip will add further revenue.
Travel agents could also see some last minute bookings with VisitEngland’s survey saying another 7.6m Brits are undecided whether they will take an overnight stay.
ABTA’s members have seen strong sales for domestic breaks including the Channel Islands and city breaks to Edinburgh and London.
Minister for Tourism Helen Grant said: “The bank holiday weekend is set to be a bumper one for domestic tourism, generating over GBP1 billion in spend for the UK economy. From city breaks to days out on the coast, world class music events to cultural trips, the UK has something for everyone to enjoy.”
In the overseas number crunch by ABTA Spain came out as the favourite destination particularly Mallorca, Ibiza and the Canaries, while Greece, Turkey, Tunisia, Florida and Cancun are also favourites.
Around 986,000 people are expected to fly from London airports; 172,000 from Manchester; 72,000 from Birmingham and 150,000 from Scottish airports.
Mark Tanzer, ABTA chief executive said: “This weekend is set to be one of the busiest of the year as we see lots of holidaymakers heading off for the bank holiday weekend. Whilst a holiday budget will go further abroad this year thanks to a strong pound, we are also expecting lots of people to enjoy the long weekend at home.”
