AirAsia load factors dip in August

AirAsia experienced a slight drop in cabin load factors in August 2011, as passenger demand failed to keep pace with capacity growth. The low-cost carrier group recorded average loads of 74% last month – down two percentage points year-on-year. Passenger traffic actually increased 13.8% compared to August 2010, but the airline also expanded its available seat capacity by 17.1%.
The performance of AirAsia Indonesia was the main driver of the result; the subsidiary added 40.5% extra seat capacity in August 2011, but only experienced a 28.1% rise in passenger traffic, causing load factors to plummet six points to 71%. The group’s core Malaysian unit also saw falling load factors, with a drop of two points to 73%. Thai AirAsia’s load factors however, grew strongly. A 25.3% increase in passenger traffic outpaced a 22.2% capacity expansion, pushing load factors up three points to 80%.
