Plans to expand the terminal at London Southend Airport have been approved by Rochford Council.
The second phase of the new terminal, which opened on 28 February, will become 90 metres longer with more space for check-in desks, baggage drop-off points and security screening channels. Its departures lounge, arrivals area, rail and catering facilities will also be extended in the area, which is to facilitate an expected 2 million passengers annually by 2020. Work on the extension is expected to begin later this year.
“We are very pleased that Rochford Council has indicated they support this extension, which will ensure that we are able to maintain the high levels of customer service we intend to be the hallmark of London Southend Airport as our passenger numbers grow,” said Alastair Welch, managing director at the airport. “This is also further evidence of the role the redeveloped airport is playing in supporting the regeneration of the wider economy”.
