easyJet has outlined its vision for London Luton Airport following a consultation process by Luton Borough Council and London Luton Airport Operations Limited.
The carrier, which has its main base and carries half its passengers at the airport, believes the airport is a viable option to increase capacity in the squeezed south east and has presented several key factors into its future development, including improved access and infrastructure.
Paul Simmons, UK director at easyJet said the airport needs to “grasp this opportunity” to grow. “Developing the airport infrastructure is only one part of what is needed at London Luton. We believe that the airport and the Council should work proactively with airlines to find the best solution for passengers and for the local taxpayers who ultimately own the airport,” he explained. “This solution must cover airport infrastructure, improvement of road and rail access and the changing of old perceptions which are holding us back”.
easyJet’s response included improved access by train to the airport and removal of a charge for the Luton Airport Parkway shuttle bus. easyJet’s response also included more stands, seating and retail to reduce waiting times at security and immigration as well as remove the need for passengers to get a bus to planes. Its response also included the need for phased growth and infrastructure to avoid congestion.
Earlier this year Luton Airport Airport announced it aims to increase its maximum capacity by seven million passengers per year if plans go ahead for a modified site. The airport hopes to carry up to 18 million passengers per annum in the changes, which would use its existing runway and boundary.
