The Delhi High Court on Thursday directed Air India pilots to end the strike immediately or face contempt of court action. The court has asked the Indian Pilots Guild (IPG) to comply with the 9 May order restraining it from continuing with the illegal strike by reporting sick and staging demonstrations.
“In our view, no litigant can avail of any discretionary remedy from the court by willfully and flagrantly disobeying the orders of the court,” a bench of justices Sanjay Krishan Kaul and Rajiv Shakdher said, while hearing the petition by the IPG. “You cannot take advantage of the appeal as you are in contempt,” the court added.
The airline management has so far sacked 71 pilots, including office bearers of the IPG, and derecognised the union. The pilots went on strike last week to protest against the training of erstwhile Indian Airlines pilots on the airline’s new Boeing 787 Dreamliners, which are expected to be inducted in the Air India fleet next month. The strike yesterday entered its 10th day with the airline’s losses mounting up to INR188 crore.
