Asia routes boost Gatwick numbers

Gatwick Airport has seen its passenger numbers increase 6.9% in March year-on-year following its new routes into Asia.
The airport carried 33.8 million passengers during March this year, with its turnover up 8.6% to £517.4m. With all London’s airports competing for new routes into Asia, Gatwick has secured flights into South Korea, Vietnam, Hong Kong, China and Turkey. It has also seen a revamp since its break away from former owners BAA.
“We have been competing with Heathrow, Stansted and Luton and other European airports, and this has seen us achieve passenger growth every single month over the course of the year,” said Steve Wingate, chief executive officer at Gatwick Airport. “Passengers and airlines are benefiting from new facilities and we are currently investing around £20 million per month. We expect to invest around a further £435 million over the next two years as we complete our six year £1.2 billion programme”.
