A new report looking into the cost of long-haul holidays has named Sri Lanka as the best value for the third year running.

According to the Post Office Travel Money’s Long-Haul Holiday Report, the destination remains the best value for money for British travellers despite price increases of 21% in the last year.

If spend in the country had not seen a 22% rise the destination would have been taken over by Vietnam for its value, Thailand has been bumped down from second to sixth for in-resort prices following increases of 17%, overtaken by Vietnam, Bali, Indonesia, Mexico and Gambia respectively.

The Post Office report compares prices for 12 ‘typical tourist items’ such as a three-course meal for two with wine. Also considering fluctuations in the exchange rate, Sri Lanka’s prices totalled GBP43.85 while Malaysia and South Korea were some of the priciest in the Far East.

In the USA Washington D.C. came out the cheapest followed by Orlando with both in the global top 10 value destinations. South Africa and Egypt completed the top 10.

“Sterling is stronger this year for almost every destination we surveyed but resort costs can change the picture,” said Andrew Brown from Post Office Travel Money, encouraging pre-holiday exchanges.

Meanwhile a long-haul report issued by Hayes & Jarvis found New York continues to be the most popular destination, followed by Thailand, the Maldives, Las Vegas and Mexico. Vietnam, Cambodia and Japan have all gained ground, while many travellers are now combining Las Vegas with San Francisco or Hawaii. Dominican Republic, Mauritius and Egypt have also been strong growth destinations for H&J.
