The Noosa region of Queensland will play host to the British & Irish Lions rugby team on the first part of its 2013 tour of Australia.

The team, management and media will visit Noosa in June 2013 for a training and recovery week. Tourism Noosa said it is hoping to benefit from the estimated 25,000 fans that travel with the team.

“This is an incredible opportunity for Noosa. The British & Irish Lions have the biggest following of any [rugby] football team in the world with the majority of their fans coming from the UK. This type of high yield business will offer a great boost for our tourism industry in addition to the international media exposure that will be generated,” said Tourism Noosa’s General Manager, Damien Massingham.

The Lions tour every four years, alternating between Australia, South Africa and New Zealand. Next year’s tour will include six regional games and three test matches in Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney.
