The cruise industry has made huge global strides to reap back the losses sustained during the economic downtown and figures from around the world are now showing that more and more people are taking up cruising as a holiday.
The UK cruise industry has undergone a 10% year-on-year (y-o-y) rise in passenger number, and globally the amount of people taking an ocean cruise rose by two million – topping the 20 million figure for the first time.
In data released by Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) the total amount of people cruising rose from 18.7 million in 2010 to 20.6 million in 2011. Of that 20.6 million, 11.5 million cruised in North America and 6.2 million sailed in Europe. The number does not take into account river cruising, which is also undergoing a huge increase in popularity.
Overall European cruises were the most popular, increasing by 9% y-o-y in total.
