Carnival subsidiary Holland America Line (HAL) has announced that it is to partner with the Keukenhof Spring Gardens in the Netherlands to grow an exclusive tulip in celebration of its 140 year anniversary.
The flower, which was designed by master grower Jan Pennings, will be a white petalled tulip to honour the firm – which was founded in Rotterdam on 18 April 1873 as a transatlantic cargo and passenger company.
The bulbs of the tulip, which is due to be harvested next spring, were handed over to HAL captain Edward van Zaane and member of the HAL Dutch advisory board Martin Schröder by Pennings last Friday (16 November).
The event was held by a windmill which had been donated by HAL to Keukenhof Gardens in 1957.
Keukenhof is the largest flower garden in the world with approximately seven million flower bulbs from 1,600 varieties planted each year.
