Specialist Norwegian cruise line Hurtigruten has announced that it is to launch a new shore excursion for its Antarctica cruises where guests will camp on the ice.

Passengers will be able to follow in the steps of famous explorers like Robert Falcon Scott and Roald Amundsen, with tours taken in small, intimate groups of no more than 15 guests.

Specialist equipment, including sleeping bags and tents for extreme conditions, will be provided by the firm. Each tent will comfortably sleep two people.

The shore excursion takes in a night on the ice before guests return to the ship to have their breakfast. The location of the camping site will be determined nearer the time and is dependent on conditions.

In order to guarantee the safety and comfort of guests, the excursion has been developed in collaboration with the Norwegian Polar Institute, which will also ensure that the local environment isn’t affected by the excursion.

All guests will receive a full briefing for the excursion which will be taken on cruises on the MS Fram.

The excursion can be purchased onboard at a rate of GBP330 per person.
