Ultra-luxury cruise line Crystal Cruises has announced it will be offering a shore excursion to Christ the Redeemer in Brazil, where guests can take in a mass at the sacred chapel.

The experience is an industry first – with the service being conducted at the remote Our Lady of Aparecida Chapel – and will only be offered to passengers taking Crystal’s Exotic Amazon cruise, which starts on 10 March. The experience will also only be offered to 15 guests.

Crystal’s land programmes team had reportedly spent a year trying to gain approval for the excursion which needed to be signed off by Rio’s Diocese. The service will be conducted by Crystal’s onboard priest, Monsignor Davis and will be available for US$145 per person.

“As soon as I saw the space in 2011, I knew that bringing our guests there for worship would be a way to help them connect to this iconic landmark in a deeply personal way,” said John Stoll, vice president of land and port operations. “It is a testament to the dedication and reputation of Crystal and our tour partners that we have been able to secure this opportunity and get the chapel to open their doors just for us.”

The chapel was built to commemorate the 75 year anniversary of the statue and is located 2,300 feet above sea level.
