Finnair spreads wings in Asia

Finnair has expanded its operations in Asia with the launch of new services to Xi’an and Hanoi.
The airline will now operate three weekly flights to both the northern Chinese city and Vietnamese capital throughout the summer season, until 27 October.
The launches form part of Finnair’s Asian expansion strategy, which aims to take advantage of the Finland’s location on the edge of Europe, offering shorter-than-usual flying times to Asia. Last year the airline launched services to Chongqing and Singapore, and it now operates direct to 13 Asian cities, including five in China. The new Hanoi fights however, mark Finnair’s first scheduled service to Vietnam.
“This week marks an important milestone in Finnair’s 90 years of history, as we build on a legacy of building better connections between Europe and Asia and bring our total number of Asian destinations to 13,” said the airline’s CEO, Pekka Vauramo. “Strong economic growth in China and Vietnam, combined with a growing appetite for outbound travel from both destinations, are driving our strategic focus on Asian traffic. There continue to be many exciting opportunities for growth in the East.”
The new Hanoi flights will operate every Monday, Thursday and Saturday using an Airbus A330-300, while the Xi’an service will run every Tuesday, Friday and Sunday, using the same aircraft.
In the first five months of the year, Finnair’s Asian traffic increased 5.6% – ahead of a 2.1% expansion of seat capacity.
