Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) has moved to upgrade its long-haul fleet by agreeing to purchase 12 new wide-body aircraft from Airbus.
The Copenhagen-based carrier has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the European planemaker for eight Airbus A350-900s and four A330-300s, in a deal worth more than US$3.1 billion at current list prices.
“This extensive fleet renewal plan [will] give SAS a long-haul fleet that will be top of class in the industry. It will truly increase our competitiveness and strengthen our customer offering – both with regard to comfort, service and efficiency,” said Rickard Gustafson, president & CEO of SAS. We look forward to welcoming our passengers onboard these fuel-efficient aircraft with extremely comfortable and quiet cabins.”
The new jets will join SAS’ existing fleet of 30 Airbus aircraft, which includes four A330s and seven A340s.
The A350-900 is Airbus’ brand new wide-body aircraft which can seat between 270 and 350 passengers in typical three-class layout. The A330-300 meanwhile seats approximately 300 passengers in three classes.
