Malindo ramps up Malaysian expansion

Malindo Air has announced a major expansion of its operations in Malaysia.
The new carrier, which is a subsidiary of Indonesia’s Lion Air, revealed today (27 June 2013) that it plans to use a new turboprop aircraft to launch flights from Subang Airport to three destinations in Peninsular Malaysia – Alor Setar, Langkawi and Kuala Terengganu.
These flights will add to the airline’s existing services from Subang to Penang, Kota Bharu and Johor Bahru.
“Malindo Air’s emergence at Subang Airport has been warmly received by the public. Our flights to Kota Bharu have been flying with more than 90% capacity most of the time. Following such encouraging response since the launch of our Subang operations, we have decided to implement the new routes from Subang to Alor Setar, Kuala Terengganu and Langkawi,” said Malindo’s CEO, Chandran Rama Muthy. “We are happy to provide another product which enables our guests to enjoy a new flying experience.”
Flights from Subang to Alor Setar, in northwest Malaysia, Kuala Terengganu in the east, and the resort island of Langkawi, will all operate daily using a 72-seat ATR72-600 aircraft.
The turboprop operations across the Malay Peninsula complement Malindo’s jet aircraft flights to Malaysia’s eastern states of Sabah and Sarawak. The expansion from Subang will put the new carrier in direct competition with Malaysia Airlines’ regional unit, Firefly.
