Gatwick Airport has posted a record June for load factors and passenger traffic ahead of the key summer months.
The airport has seen a 3.3% increase in passengers during June with load factors at 86.1%, mainly driven by growth in European routes.
Carriers like Norwegian, easyJet, SWISS and Thomson have announced new capacity to continue this trend.
Gatwick’s long-haul traffic took a dip as US Airways, Korean Air and Hong Kong Airlines pulled from the airport but was picked up by increasing traffic to Dubai.
Nick Dunn, chief financial officer at Gatwick said an increased number of business routes had helped growth.
“Business destinations in particular continue to grow, with increased services to Scandinavia, Luxembourg and Copenhagen being introduced. easyJet’s new route to Moscow, which commenced earlier this year, continues to attract healthy passenger numbers thanks to the competitive rates on offer for both business and leisure travellers,” he explained.
“Gatwick achieved modest growth in June. This marked a return to the more restrained growth of earlier in the financial year, which is to be expected given the continuing strong economic headwinds. The small rise we saw this month was largely due to new airlines and routes which have started from Gatwick this year,” Dunn added.
