easyJet confirms Airbus order

British low cost carrier easyJet has confirmed the order of 135 new aircraft, after its shareholders voted through the proposed contract yesterday.
The deal, which is worth up to GBP8.6 billion, will see the company purchase 100 Airbus A320neos and 35 A320ceos – the latter will be delivered by 2017 with the former coming between 2017 and 2022.
The contract also has an option for a further 100 A320neos.
“We are delighted that the easyJet board has now confirmed the order. The A320 family aircraft have the tallest and widest cabin of any single aisle aircraft for added passenger space and comfort. Operationally, the NEO is without doubt the most productive and fuel efficient aircraft available,” said John Leahy, Airbus’ chief operating officer-customers.
The deal wasn’t unanimously voted through however, with 37% stakeholder Sir Stelios Haji-Ioannou publicly voicing his disapproval of the contract.
UK newspaper The Independent quoted a family spokesman as saying: “It’s a disgrace that shareholders were not told the full facts of this transaction.
“Clearly the board got its way – for now. But if in the coming years Sir Stelios believes this deal has been destructive of shareholder value, he will hold directors to account, legally if necessary.”
The vote was carried through with 192 million in favour against 144 million opposed.
