Google will soon start mapping the temples of Angkor.
The US technology company arrived in Cambodia last week to announce a major new drive into the country, which will also see it map the streets of the capital, Phnom Penh. Google Street View will use cars with 360⁰ cameras to collect images from the two locations. And local media reported tourism officials as saying that the move would help boost Cambodia’s appeal as a tourist destination.
“By making the photos available online, people will realise Cambodia’s potential more easily,” Pak Sokhom, an official with the Cambodian Ministry of Tourism, was quoted saying by the Phnom Penh Post. “After seeing the images, they will dream about a real visit.”
Angkor Archaeological Park covers approximately 400km², and initial mapping projects are expected to take several months to complete. After mapping Angkor and Phnom Penh, Google plans to move on the rest of the country.
