Gujarat is expecting a 20% rise in tourists during 2013-14.
“We have seen 13.6% growth in the number tourist visiting Gujarat last year – that is around 2.5 crore. We are optimistically targeting the growth to be 20% in 2013-14,” TCGL managing director, Sanjay Kaul told The Hindu BusinessLine.
The Tourism Corporation of Gujarat Limited (TCGL) has identified 39 locations in the State and has called for bids from large operators to put up their projects. “We have identified 39 locations in the state that include beaches and eco-tourism projects. We have called for bids from large operators, many of them are interested to put up star hotels and resorts.” Kaul said.
TCGL said the state had grown as a major tourist destination to travellers from the neighbouring states of Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh, especially from Bengaluru.
Maximum visitors from Maharashtra
The Tourism Corporation Gujarat Limited (TCGL) has seen maximum number of tourists from Maharashtra.
The state of Maharashtra contributed close to 35% with 53.56 lakh tourists visiting Gujarat. Uttar Pradesh and Bihar followed Maharashtra at 982,379 (18.3%), Rajasthan 869,929(16.2%), Madhya Pradesh 699,426 (13.1%) and West Bengal 210,603 (3.9%) for the year ending 31 March, 2013.
Around 439,715 tourists (8.2%) came from southern states, while 275,369 (5.1%) tourists visited from north-eastern states. “Tourists from Maharashtra also have families living in Gujarat and connectivity is a big factor contributing is a big factor contributing to huge tourism numbers. We have observed that Rann Utsav held in Kutch every year attracts a lot of tourists from Mumbai. We are hosting a road show at Mumbai on 29 July 2013 to showcase the tourist destinations of Gujarat,” said Nirav Munshi, Manager (Hotels, Tours and Travels) at TCGL.
