Royal hits construction milestone for new ships

The world’s second biggest cruise line, Royal Caribbean, hit two major construction milestones last week as it laid the keel for Quantum of the Seas and cut the steel for Anthem of the Seas.
The two ships will both be part of the company’s new Quantum class with Quantum of the Seas launching in autumn 2014 and Anthem launching in spring 2015.
“Today is a very special day in the development of our new Quantum class, as we are now two steps closer to delighting guests around the world with Quantum cruising,” said Adam Goldstein, president and CEO, Royal Caribbean International. “It’s incredibly rewarding to see Quantum of the Seas and Anthem of the Seas coming together so well, and today we not only honour these two very important milestones, but also recognise the years of hard work and dedication from the team developing these ships.”
Quantum’s keel laying involved moving a 430 ton piece – measuring 59 foot by 75 foot – which needed an 800 ton crane to bring it into the dock.
The ships will include industry firsts including viewing platform North Star, sky diving experience RipCord by iFly and Virtual Balcony staterooms.
