The Ministry of Tourism has decided to support the Kerala Boat Race.
The race is annually held in backwaters of Alleppey and surrounding areas. Minister of Tourism, Dr K Chiranjeevi announced on occasion of the start of 61st Nehru Boat Race in Alappuzha that Kerala will contribute US$1.75 million (INR17.50 Lakh) for this annual event, while MoT will contribute a similar amount.
Speaking on the occasion, Chiranjeevi also announced a Mega Alleppey Backwater Development project with a provision of US$7.69 million (INR46.62 crore) will be made by the MoT. “The Backwaters of Kerala and the annual Boat race have immense tourism potential. The Tourism Ministry is therefore making all efforts to convert the Backwaters of Kerala into internationally sought destination,” Chiranjeevi said.
