EC investigates Venice cruise calls

The European Commission (EC) has asked Italian authorities to provide information into claims that cruise ships are sailing too close to the shore in Venice.
The EC is said to be concerned over recent occurrences in the port and wants to ensure a disaster does not occur like the Costa Concordia incident.
These include MSC Divina’s use of the port, the largest cruise ship to do so, and a near-collision between Carnival Sunshine and the Rivi dei Sette Martiri in July.
According to EU news and policy website EurActiv.com, the EU has been alerted by news reports which include the criticism from the first MSC visit.
Helen Kearns, spokesperson for Transport Commissioner Siim Kallas told the website: “Security is the top priority for us. We are in contact with the Port of Venice to get further clarification.”
Safety on ships that are placed under the EU flag were put into place by Kallas this spring.
