The 20th General Assembly of the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) has seen Seychelles Tourism come into the spotlight.
The current event being held in Zambia and Zimbabwe, saw Alain St Ange, minister for tourism and culture in Seychelles appointed to a full seat on the UNWTO Executive Council. Subsequently, the former CEO of the Seychelles Tourism Board, Elsia Grandcourt, has also been named as the new UNWTO director for Africa.
Other countries who came in on the Executive Council with the Seychelles are Tunisia, Angola, and South Africa.
“The election helps our islands to be heard and seen as a relevant tourism destination. Members of our delegation have been working hard in meetings with other organizations such as SADC, RETOSA, and the Caribbean Tourism Organization and also with other Member States,” said minister Alain St Ange.
Elsia Grandcourt replaces Ousmane Ndiaye who had been the regional director for Africa at the UNWTO for many years. Seychelles continues to see positive growth in visitor arrival numbers with year-to-date figures showing a 14% growth over the 2012 figures.
