Marriott International has introduced its Autograph Collection to Tokyo.

A deal with Prince Hotels saw the Prince Sakura Tower Tokyo become Japan’s first Autograph Collection member when it reopened earlier this month. It is also only the brand’s second property in Asia, following The Stones Hotel in Bali.

Speaking at the signing ceremony in Tokyo, Simon Cooper, Marriott International’s president and managing director for Asia, paid tribute to the hotel’s “wonderful new design and inspiring gardens”.

“The vision and inspiration behind Autograph Collection was to create an evolving ensemble of strikingly independent hotels and this hotel certainly meets those criteria,” Cooper said.

“Tokyo is one of the most exciting and vibrant cities in the world, and we could not be more proud to introduce Autograph Collection to this great city with the conversion of The Prince Sakura Tower – and the timing could not be better with this great city having just won the 2020 Olympic bid.”

Originally opened in 1998, the 288-room Prince Sakura Tower Tokyo recently underwent a major renovation incorporating its rooms, lobby and restaurants. Its Japanese garden also features more than 200 cherry trees.

It will now join the Autograph Collection’s portfolio of almost 50 upscale, independent hotels around the world.
