Garuda takes next step in fleet expansion

Garuda Indonesia continued the expansion of its wide-body fleet this week, with the delivery of its first brand new Airbus A330-300 aircraft.
The new aircraft is the first of 18 A330-300s ordered by the Indonesian national carrier, and comes equipped in a two-class layout including 36 flat-bed seats in business class. Garuda will operate the aircraft from Jakarta and Bali to destinations across Asia, the Middle East and the Pacific.
The new aircraft joins Garuda’s existing fleet of 10 smaller A330-200s, plus some older A330-300 models.
“The A330 has been a key element in the success of Garuda Indonesia,” said Emirsyah Satar, Garuda’s president & CEO. “It remains one of the most efficient aircraft types on the market today and is a firm favourite with our passengers, offering the highest levels of in-flight comfort.”
“With its new A330-300s Garuda Indonesia will benefit from proven operational reliability and the lowest possible operating costs,” said John Leahy, Airbus’ chief operating officer. “At the same time, the airline’s passengers will be able to relax in one of the most comfortable cabins in the sky, with more space and wider seats in both classes than on competing aircraft in this size category.”
Garuda Indonesia currently operates 106 aircraft, but expects to expand to a fleet of 194 by 2015. The A330-300 delivery follows the recent arrival of the airline’s first Boeing 777-300ER aircraft, which it will eventually use to launch direct flights to Europe. Services between Jakarta and London Heathrow are expected to commence in May 2014.
