Instagram is one of the biggest-growing social media websites, with Gatwick Airport now hoping to continue its success on the site with a new staff initiative.
The airport has given employees phones and the app to start sharing photos they take during their working day at the airport.
Eleven recruits have been trained to find photo-worthy material and learn to edit them using the app, with images to also be shown on the airport’s EyeEm and Flickr accounts.
Gatwick has had an Instagram account since May 2011 with 150 million active users but will offer a more ‘live’ experience in this latest campaign.
“Not only is travel inherently visual, people instinctively want to share when they are about to fly. We took advantage of this fact early on, being the first airport in the world to spot the potential Instagram had as a communications platform and visual news feed,” said Gatwick’s head of airport communications Samantha Holgate.
“By recruiting mobile reporters from among our staff we’ve taken this one stage further. We’ve introduced real time reporting of what’s going on at the airport, as well as continuing to involve our whole team in our social media initiatives,” she added.
