IndiGo, SpiceJet lead domestic traffic in October

India’s low-cost carriers dominated the race in October as domestic air traffic for the month grew 10% over the same
month last year.
IndiGo and SpiceJet were number one and two, respectively, in terms of the market share, taking the maximum advantage out of the growing market. Last month, domestic airlines carried 50.08 lakh passengers, compared to 45.55 lakh during the corresponding month last year.
Air traffic in October also improved over September 2013 when domestic airlines carried 44.65 lakh passengers. The growth in October over the previous month was 12.1%. IndiGo continued to be the market leader with 30.2% market share, while SpiceJet had a 20% market share. Jet Airways Group recorded 23.8% with JetKonnect accounting to 5.4% and full-service carrier Jet Airways recording 18.2% traffic. Air India closed at 18.4% market share, GoAir at 7.7% and newly launched regional carrier AirCosta had a 0.1% market share.
DGCA data also revealed that IndiGo was the leader in passenger load factor with its flights flying nearly two-thirds full at 74.8%. SpiceJet’s passenger load factor was 67.5%, GoAir 65.9%, Jet Konnect 68.9% while Air Costa managed to operate with nearly half full planes with a 48.5% load factor. Between January and October 2013, the growth was 4.77% to 507.02 lakh against 483.95 lakh in the same period last year.
