Marriott International has opened a new hotel in Tokyo.

The Tokyo Marriott Hotel becomes the company’s 12th hotel in Japan and its fourth in Tokyo. But it marks the debut of the company’s flagship Marriott Hotels & Resorts brand in the Japanese capital.

Set on a hilltop location next to the Gotenyama Garden, the hotel is located close to the bullet train station of Shinagawa. The 249-room property has been rebranded from its previous incarnation as the Gotenyama Garden Hotel Laforet Tokyo, and reopens as a Marriott following a major renovation.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Marriott’s president & managing director for Asia, Simon Cooper, said; “I am delighted to be here today at the official opening of this magnificent hotel. Marriott International’s business model for growth around the world is to work with local partners and real estate developers who have the local expertise, knowledge and skills, and who know their markets inside out.

“We also look for people who share our own values and culture, and in [hotel owner] Mori Trust we have found an excellent partner to work with here in Tokyo. We are delighted to be working with Mori Trust and to have the Marriott Hotels brand associated with this stunning hotel.”

The recent refurbishment has revamped the hotel’s lobby and public spaces with high-tech features that Marriott says are designed for the “new generation of business travellers”. Facilities include technology-driven meeting spaces, three restaurants, a garden tea house, swimming pool and two wedding chapels, one of which will open in February 2014.

The Tokyo Marriott Hotel adds to the company’s existing Courtyard by Marriott, Ritz-Carlton and Autograph Collection properties in the city.
