A top UAE aviation official has cast doubt over the potential return of RAK Airways after the carrier ceased operations at the turn of the calendar year.
Speaking publicly at the UAE General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) 2014-2016 Strategic Plan launch, Saif Mohammed Al Suwaidi said on Thursday; “I don’t think that [RAK Airways] are coming back.”
The Ras Al Khaimah national carrier which launched in 2006 under a “value-for-money” business model announced the cessation of operations on 1 January 2014 with immediate effect.
The company statement read; ‘The board of directors took the decision today to suspend the operations until further notice. We believe this decision is in the best interest of the airline and its shareholders. We will take this time to re-evaluate the best options available for RAK Airways future as well as those that fit the industry requirements of the emirate of Ras Al Khaimah.”
As it looks increasingly unlikely the airline will return to the skies, questions are already being raised about the allocation of landing rights in India, Pakistan, Nepal, Saudi Arabia and Qatar. Mr. Al Suwaidi was unable to give an affirmative answer on Thursday, but indicated an announcement would follow this week.
