British Airways’ short-haul operations have topped the new ‘Fly Quiet’ league table, which measures airlines’ noise emissions at London Heathrow Airport.
The UK national carrier achieved the top ‘green’ rating for all six criteria in the second published table. Virgin Atlantic’s domestic carrier, Little Red, was second, with Aer Lingus third, Emirates fourth and Qantas fifth.
But one of the most improved airlines was Cathay Pacific, which jumped from 24th to 12th place. This followed Cathay’s replacement of its older Boeing 747-400s with quieter B777 aircraft. Thai Airways climbed six places by replacing its B747s with Airbus A340s.
“These results show the Fly Quiet programme has already has a positive impact on noise, encouraging airlines to use the quietest aircraft available and to fly them in the quietest possible way,” Heathrow said in a statement. “This measure, along with variable landing charges, incentivises airlines use their quietest aircraft around 15% more on Heathrow routes.”
The Fly Quiet table launched in November 2013 and lists Heathrow’s 50 quietest airlines every three months. CLICK HERE to see the full table.
